SuitcaseFriends!  The Crossfit Games & Cali Drop ins

Aside from the sweet traps, washboard abs, sqaure jaws and thick thighs, the Crossfit community is arguably the best part of the Crossfit culture.  I have the authority to say this:  I travel, drop in, meet a variety of Crossfitters and the experience is generally the same: a welcoming group, looking to help where they can.  If you can imagine that this culture exists when you drop in to a gym with total strangers, imagine the connections you make with those you suffer with, week in and week out.

This is all a prelude to say thank THANK YOU.  I can take no credit for the write up that follows and must direct you to Ashley @aarnett3 (instagram).  She’s the be(a)st.  She and her motley crew took a week and change to attend the Crossfit Games and hit a number of local boxes in the process.

Take a read and a page out of her book if you’ve got your sights set The Games…as an attendee : )

United Barbell – Crossfit SoMa – San Francisco, CA – @unitedbarbell

Some good friends brought me out to California for a few days and lucky for me, United Barbell, the home of Crossfit SoMa, was only a block away. For business or pleasure, the online reservations, waiver and variety of classes made it easy to get a workout in.

When you walk in, you’ve got the primary WOD area up front.

Outdoor WOD location: Greenbelt Park – Hermosa Beach, CA

Gang –

My boy from the West Coast, T-dog Jenkins, sent over a picture of a good spot for an outdoor workout if you find yourself in the South Bay (e.g. Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo beeeeches).

As you can tell, they’ve got some pull up bars and other equipment.  Pull ups, abs, burpees, double-unders galore.

Although I haven’t been there myself, there’s a woodchip running loop too that YELP has a picture of.

Have at it, ya’ll!

Crossfit in Los Angeles, CA – @CFBeachBox @laxcrossfit @sarahbeston

Sadly, this is an outdated post from before I started SF.  But hell, these two places came through for me when I needed a box to get back to normal during a business trip.  So, both spots deserve at least a little love.

LAX Crossfit (@laxcrossfit)

If you’re in and out of LAX, this place is a no brainer.  Roughly 10 min from the airport at worst, it’s basically located on corner of S La Cienega Blvd and W 120th St, in the back of a small industrial-looking complex. (From the airport, you’d make a left into their lot just before you reach 120th st, traveling south on La Cienega).

Addy:  11944 S. La Cienega Blvd., 90250

5, 6, 7 & 8 AM/PM most days

I’ve dropped in before their scheduled classes and they were really accomodating to my schedule and allowing me to do my home box’s WOD.  I know this disagrees with what it says in their drop in policy and, honestly, I was a bad crossfitter and didn’t look closely at this before showing up.  So, don’t go saying Phil from SF said you could do your own thing, they clearly spell it out that they prefer you do their programming.

Drop Ins

  • $20 fee. If you’re looking to do multiple days, send us an email to discuss a personalized punch card.
  • Have minimum 1 month CrossFit experience.
  • Come a few minutes early to fill out a waiver, or download it, fill it out, and bring it with you.
  • No open gym for drop-ins, you must do our scheduled programming.
  • No sign-up required, just show up to our scheduled classes. Have a look at the schedule here.

I wish I could say more about the coaches and the members, it was just a little too long ago to remember with my travels.  Long and short – I’ve got positive vibes and you should get them too.

Crossfit Beach Box (@CFBeachBox)

Here’s a little gem, located off of Artesia Blvd in Redondo Beach.  I was staying with a buddy and his wife (@sarahbeston – she’s got a dominant yoga practice, worth checking out!!) and noticed this place was right around the corner.  This place is a little smaller than some places you may have seen, but don’t mistake its size as a shortcoming.  I received a ton of attention from Arbiel and couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Addy:  2415 1/2 Artesia Blvd., Redondo Beach, CA 90278  – The only advice I have is around location, it’s set a little off the main road, behind a small tienda.  There are a few parking spots around back.

Drop Ins

  • I didn’t find a specific link for drop ins, so be sure to drop them a line before going.  I was in a tight spot and showed up for a noon class, thankfully the class was small and I received a ton of good attention from Arbiel, the founder.

As always, it’s a pleasure to be somewhere different and find something familar.  Don’t be scared of dropping in when you’ve got so many great places to choose from.

Bruce’s Beach – Manhattan Beach, CA

I had a short and awesome stint living in Southern California, Venice Beach to be exact. I made a friend for life during that time and he turned me on to a park in Manhattan Beach that is great for workouts near the beach.  Better yet, there’s a set of pull up bars near the beach.

We’ve done all sorts of workouts here. During one of my more recent visits we did the MARSOC short card:

1. 30 Push-ups
2. 30 Air squats
3. 30 Crunches
4. 10 Burpees
5. 10 Windmills
6. 30 Push-ups
7. 30 Mountain climbers
8. 30 Flutter kicks
9. 10 Burpees
10. 10 Cherry pickers (4-count)
11. 30 Push-ups
12. 30 Star jumpers (or jumping jacks)
13. 30 Back Extensions (“supermans”)
14. 10 Burpees
15. 10 Chain breakers
16. 30 Push-ups
17. 30 Lunges
18. 30 Hello dollies
19. 10 Burpees
20. 10 Trunk twists
21. 3 Max sets of dead-hang pull-ups or flexed-arm hangs

Long card anyone? Not I. But go nuts.

I’ve dropped in at Crossfit Beach Box and LAX Crossfit. Will share those posts in the future.
